The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
